World Champ Pakistan; Modi in Washington; Jadhav's Video

How did bottom-ranked Pakistan defeat higher-ranked teams, including the defending champion India, to win the Campions Trophy? Did the Pakistan Super League contribute to it? How did Mohammad Amir's return help Pakistan cricket? Who deserves credit and why? PSL Chief Najam Sethi? Captain Sarfaraz Ahmad? Coach Mickey Arthur? Aggressive new youngsters emerging from PSL?

What is the agenda for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the White House to meet President Trump? Defense deals? F-16s? Drones? H1B visas for Indians? US-India Alliance to check China's rise? Will the timing of a white ex-employee's lawsuit against Infosys influence the H1B discussion? Will this visit fuel US-China competition for world leadership? Is this a Thucydides Trap that could lead to war between US and China in South Asia region?

What is in the accused Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav's latest video recorded after his death sentence and released by Pakistan ISPR this week? Is the timing of the release important? Are additional new confessions of sponsoring acts of terror and the the mercy appeal part of Jadhav's attempt to save his life?

Viewpoint From Overseas host Faraz Darvesh discusses these questions with panelists Misbah Azam and Riaz Haq (www.riazhaq.com)

PSL's Role in Pakistan's Meteoric Rise to ICC Championship 2017

Pakistan's national cricket team scored a historic win in Champions Trophy 2017 final against defending champions India on June 18th by the highest-ever margin of 180 runs in any ICC international tournament final. New players emerging from Pakistan Super League and the return of players like Mohammad Amir significantly strengthened the bottom-ranked Pakistan side to beat much higher-ranked teams, including India.

Pakistan Team Celebrating Champions Trophy 2017 Victory

Pakistan Team's Defiance:

The Pakistan team that barely made the cut to play in Champions Trophy as the 8th ranked team lost its very first match against arch-rival India by 124 runs in group B on June 4, 2017. Subsequently,  the team to went on to defeat top ranked South Africa, 4th ranked England and 7th ranked Sri Lanka to reach the trophy's final match against India.

Often described as "predictably unpredictable",  Pakistan XI bounced back strongly after being written off by most commentators and pundits. They demonstrated the resilience that also characterizes the people and the state of Pakistan both of which are often given the "failed" tag by Indian and western media.

Success Factors:

There are many factors that are believed to have contributed to Pakistan's spectacular rise to the world champion status in international cricket. The team captain Sarfaraz Ahmad is not only a good leader but also a very good batsman-wicket keeper who keeps his cool under pressure. The return of aggressive paceman Mohammad Amir to the team after a long suspension for match-fixing has bolstered Pakistan's bowling attack. But, most of all, I believe it is the discovery and grooming of new talent in Pakistan Super League.

Pakistan Super League:

Pakistan Super League (PSL) is a T20 cricket league with 6 franchise teams-- one each in the cities of Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta and Multan. Multan franchise was just recently sold by PSL to the Schon Group for $41.6 million over 8 years. PSL generates millions of dollars in PCB income that helps promote cricket in the country. It also exposes new talent that would otherwise remain hidden.

Several youngsters in Pakistan side who shined in the recent Champions Trophy matches were selected after they played and performed well in PSL 2, the league's second season earlier this year. For example Fakhar Zaman (Lahore Qalandars), Hassan Ali (Peshawar Zalmi), Shadab Khan (Islamabad United),  Rumman Raees (Islamabad United).

Opener Fakhar Zaman gave Pakistan the rapid start it needed with the runs that built the foundation for other batsmen down the line to capitalize on; Mohammad Amir struck early with quick top order wickets and then Hassan Ali and Shadab Khan kept up the pressure with their aggressive bowling. These youngsters also energized the rest of the team, particularly the more senior low-performing players, to do better.

Credit to Najam Sethi:

PSL chairman Najam Sethi has played a crucial role in setting up the PSL that is giving young talent an opportunity to play with the best of international players and be discovered.  It's a platform that highlights Pakistan's young talent that can simply not be ignored by the Pakistan national team selectors.

Sethi can also be credited with bringing Mohammad Amir back into Pakistan team in the face of significant opposition by senior players, both former and current.

Summary:

New players emerging from PSL and the return of players like Mohammad Amir have significantly strengthened Pakistan side as witnessed by their historic win against higher-ranked teams, including India, in Champions Trophy 2017 held in the United Kingdom. PSL is also generating the needed revenue to promote cricket at the grassroots level. PSL, if used properly, can help Pakistan become a more powerful professional side using the best available talent in the country.

Pak Cricket Needs World Class Batting Coach and Top Psychologist

Pakistani national cricket team's horrible performance at the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy is uncharacteristic for a side widely regarded by experts as one of the most talented in the world. The latest losses have unleashed a torrent of anger in Pakistan with demands for heads at PCB to roll yet again.

For some in Pakistan, the understandable anger has turned into total insanity. For example, former Pakistani cricketer Aamer Suhail has laid the entire blame at the feet of Imran Khan who led Pakistan to its sole victory in ICC World Cup in 1992.

It's unfortunate that Pakistan's losses at international cricket competitions do not force a sober assessment of the team's strengths and weaknesses. Rather, the so-called "experts" resort to self-serving analyses.

In my view, a dispassionate review of the team's record would bring out the following:

1. Pakistan's bowling attack is among the most potent in the world and it should be maintained and enhanced.

2. Pakistan's batting is among the weakest in the world and it needs serious improvement.

3. Pakistani players, particularly batsmen, collapse under pressure.

The best way to move forward is to do the following:

1. Hire a world-class batting coach who has a track record as a super batsman but also knows how to effectively coach a young side. This search for such a coach needs to be world-wide and selection done in a professional manner.

2. Bring on board a world-renowned sports psychologist to increase mental toughness and improve the overall temperament and tenacity of the players to perform well under pressure. The anger for the loss should not be directed against individual players. Instead, the passion should be channelized to improve the effectiveness of the team as a cohesive unit.

Kiwis Dash Pakistan's ICC Trophy Hopes

Injury-hit New Zealand (234 for 5 in 47.5 overs) easily defeated favorites Pakistan (233 for 9) by five wickets in the second ICC Champions Trophy Semifinal match in South Africa today, bringing a sad end to Pakistan's quest for ICC Championship Trophy. After marginally losing to Australia on the last ball of the last match in group A a few days ago, this was Pakistan's second defeat in a row in ODIs leading up to the Final in Johannesburg.

While the young Pakistani bowlers performed well, the serious flaws in Pakistan's batting and fielding were on full display for all to see. On a decent batting track, Pakistani batsmen's lack of intent and self-inflicted wounds resulted in a very slow run rate and rapid of loss (throwing away) of wickets in their innings. The only bright spot in batting was the 19-year-old Umar Akmal, who fought back with a half-century. But just before the batting Powerplay, he became a part of a 32-for-5 collapse due to Simon Taufel's bad LBW decision against him. The other powerful display was by Pakistani tail-enders and bowlers Aamer and Ajmal who performed well as batsmen by putting on the last wicket partnership of 35 runs to take Pakistan to 233 runs.

Captain Younus Khan's crucial dropped catch, in particular, symbolized the failure of Pakistan's fielding against the well-disciplined New Zealand side. Younus fumbled the easy catch from Elliott when he was on 42 off 78 balls and New Zealand required 69 from 64, and only one four and two sixes had been hit in the preceding 21 overs. That drop, off Mohammad Aamer, came during an extremely tight period when New Zealand scored only 13 runs off four overs. With 59 runs required off the last eight, Vettori and Elliott called for the Powerplay, and with 10 and 14 coming off its the first and third overs, the pressure disappeared.

Looking back at the tournament, the only match where Pakistan side performed well was against traditional rival India, when they scored over 300 runs and limited India to less than 250. In all other matches, including the cliffhanger against Australia, Pakistan's lackluster batting and sub-par fielding continued to be a problem. In the only other match that they won against the weak West Indies side, they had serious problems responding to a very low score of 133 put on the board by the West Indian batsmen.

Younus Khan's interview that followed the match was very disappointing. There was no acknowledgment of responsibility for the loss, nor any understanding of the serious flaws on full display in both batting and fielding during the encounter with a relatively weak but disciplined New Zealand side.

Amidst this debacle at the ICC Championship Trophy matches, the best thing that was demonstrated in spades was the exceptional talent of Pakistani youngsters such as Umar Akmal and Mohammed Aamer, and relative newcomer Saeed Ajmal. These individuals offer great hopes for the future of cricket in Pakistan.

Are Indians Rooting For Pakistan Against Australia?

The Australia-India ODI washed out at ICC Championship tournament in South Africa today, dimming India's chances of a place in the semis. The only winner of this result is Pakistan, who are now assured of a semi-final spot. The fate of Australia and India now rests with the final two matches in the group, both on Wednesday. For India to progress they must thrash West Indies and lift their net run-rate while also hoping Australia lose to Pakistan; any win or no-result for Australia in their remaining match and they are through.

It will be interesting to watch Indians rooting for Pakistan side in the Wednesday match between Australia and Pakistan.

Earlier on Saturday, Pakistan beat India by 54 runs in ICC Champions Trophy group A match in South Africa.

In the India-Pakistan encounter, Pakistan batted first, setting a target of 303 runs for India to win. India were all out for 248 runs.

Pakistan were powered by Shoaib Malik's century and his 4th wicket record partnership of 206 runs with Muhammad Yousuf, combined with a fairly good bowling attack. Pakistan's effective fielding claimed two important run-outs of the opening batsmen Gambhir and Dravid.

India put up a good fight but it just wasn't enough to win.

With two wins from the two matches under its belt, Pakistan now leads the group A table, followed by Australia, India and West Indies in that order. Pakistan will play Australia in its final group A match on Wednesday Sept 30, 2009 at Centurion in South Africa. It will be nice if Pakistan remain unbeaten in its group matches. But, regardless of a win or loss against Australia, Pakistan is now virtually assured of a semi-final spot for this ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Here is a video clip of the match from India's Star TV channel:
