America's New Green Deal: Will Biden Ban Burgers?

President Joseph R. Biden's climate policy has recently triggered rumors in right-wing American media of a potential burger ban in America. Such speculations about beef ban have been categorically denied by Tom Vilsack, the Secretary of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). However, there are reasons to believe that the Biden focus on renewable energy alone will not be enough to achieve his ambitious targets. The current food production methods, particularly the beef industry, will also have to be fundamentally redesigned to meet Biden's climate goal of 50-52% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030. Other industrial processes that will need fundamental rethink to reduce emissions include production of cement, steel and plastics. Dealing with these challenges will require a lot of innovation and new technologies. It presents an opportunity for technology entrepreneurs to reshape the world yet again.

Meatless Meat Products

Impact of Meat Production:

Animal agriculture is a major contributor to climate change. Relatively large animals like buffaloes, cows and pigs are raised in huge numbers to cater to meat and dairy demand. These animals emit methane gas which is a powerful pollutant that is much more potent than carbon dioxide. Almost 15% of greenhouse gas emissions come from livestock, with cattle making up about two-thirds of that. Livestock farming also requires a lot of land, a significant cause of deforestation in places like Brazil’s Amazon.

What is making the situation worse is that the demand for meat and dairy is rising in large developing countries like China, India and Pakistan. It is putting greater pressure on the environment and making it difficult to limit average global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial times.

Alternative Meats:

Several technology companies are working on plant-based and cell-based meats to offer a climate-friendly alternative to beef, chicken and pork. Plant-based meats from companies like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods are already producing and shipping in significant quantities.

Other technology companies are working on cell-based meats grown in large vats from real animal cells. These companies include San Francisco-based Eat Just and Berkeley-based Memphis Meats, just to name a few.  In a recently published book entitled "Billion Dollar Burger", author Chase Purdy detailed his findings on lab-grown meats. Here is an except from the book:

"By harvesting animal cells and quite literally growing them into fat and muscle tissue inside industrial bioreactors, humans have figured out how to create the exact same meats we’ve eaten for more than half a million years. In doing so, those scientists hope to enable us to sidestep the need to slaughter billions of animals annually, and theoretically, in time, eliminate the need for an industrial farming system that pumps an alarming amount of greenhouse gases into the Earth’s warming atmosphere each year. Scientists agree that animal agriculture is responsible for about 14 percent of greenhouse greenhouse gas emissions. Fully wrapping our heads around the impact of the animal agriculture system we’ve always known is mind-bogglingly difficult. Lots of scientists attempt to measure the full environmental footprint of animal agriculture, and almost all of them have run into fierce sets of critics who challenge their methodologies and motives. Did the scientist measure the life cycle of a single animal and then multiply those data to represent its specific sector? Did they include data on the energy used to grow, manage, and transport the feed grain for cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals? How about factoring in deforestation to make room for grazing? Or the long impact of water pollution from nitrous oxide in manure?"

Industrial Processes:

The focus of most of the governments' climate policies has so far been on switching from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy. A quick look at common industrial processes like cement, steel and plastic production shows that these processes are major contributors to global warming.  Cement and steel production each contributes 8% of global greenhouse emissions.  All of these materials are essential for modern construction and manufacturing industries.

Cement production contributes greenhouse gases both directly through the production of carbon dioxide when calcium carbonate is thermally decomposed, producing lime and carbon dioxide, and also through the use of energy, particularly from the combustion of fossil fuels. Similarly, steel-making requires the use of coal to remove oxygen from iron oxide ore. This process emits large amounts of carbon dioxide. Plastics, extracted from oil, are used to make a huge range of products today. Extraction and transportation of oil and production of plastics all produce large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions.

Changing the production processes of widely used materials like cement, plastics and steel poses a major technological challenge. Among the methods proposed for reducing carbon emissions from these processes is carbon capture...both point carbon capture and direct air capture. Here's an excerpt of Bill Gates' recent book entitled "How to Avoid a Climate Disaster" on climate-friendly industrial processes for cement, steel and plastics:

"One approach is to take recycled carbon dioxide—possibly captured during the process of making cement—and inject it back into the cement before it’s used at the construction site. The company that’s pursuing this idea has several dozen customers already, including Microsoft and McDonald’s; so far it’s only able to reduce emissions by around 10 percent, though it hopes to get to 33 percent eventually. Another, more theoretical approach involves making cement out of seawater and the carbon dioxide captured from power plants. The inventors behind this idea think it could ultimately cut emissions by more than 70 percent. Yet even if these approaches are successful, they won’t give us 100 percent carbon-free cement. For the foreseeable future, we’ll have to count on carbon capture and—if it becomes practical—direct air capture to grab the carbon emitted when we make cement. For pretty much all other materials, the first thing we need is plenty of reliable clean electricity. Electricity already accounts for about a quarter of all the energy used by the manufacturing sector worldwide; to power all these industrial processes, we need to both deploy the clean energy technology we already have and develop breakthroughs that let us generate and store lots of zero-carbon electricity inexpensively. And soon we’ll need even more power, as we pursue another way to reduce emissions: electrification, which is the technique of using electricity instead of fossil fuels for some industrial processes. For example, one very cool approach for steelmaking is to use clean electricity to replace coal. A company I’m following closely has developed a new process called molten oxide electrolysis: Instead of burning iron in a furnace with coke, you pass electricity through a cell that contains a mixture of liquid iron oxide and other ingredients. The electricity causes the iron oxide to break apart, leaving you with the pure iron you need for steel, and pure oxygen as a by-product. No carbon dioxide is produced at all. This technique is promising—it’s similar to a process we’ve been using for more than a century to purify aluminum—but like the other ideas for clean steel it hasn’t yet been proven to work at an industrial scale. Clean electricity would help us solve another problem too: making plastics. If enough pieces come together, plastics could one day become a carbon sink—a way to remove carbon rather than emit it. "

Summary:

Climate change is a major challenge for humanity. It goes beyond energy production and consumption. Areas that account for bulk of greenhouse emissions include production of food, cement, plastics and steels. Dealing with these challenges will require a lot of innovation and new technologies. It presents an opportunity for technology entreprenrurs to reshape the world yet again.

What are the options that world has - in terms of the approach

Option 1 - Steel substitutes. There are many - but they are too expensive,It will take a long, long ,long time to develop new and viable tech - and to dramatically lower costs

Option 2- Alternative Raw Materials for steel - wherein the carbon print across the value chain is lower or nil. This is NOT even ON THE HORIZON - and once the raw materials become scarce - PRICES RISE AND THAT TECHNOLOGY IS UNVIABLE

Option 3 - New Technology to make steel with less power or an ALERNATIVE to power. This is NOT even ON THE HORIZON

Option 4 - OBVIATING the product which USES STEEL.This is NOT even ON THE HORIZON

Option 5 - REDUCING THE CARBON PRINT ON POWER GENERATION.THIS IS EASILY DONE - BUT IS NOT BEING DONE !

WHAT CAN BE DONE AND IS FEASIBLE - IS NOT BEING DONE !

WHAT IS BEING PONDERED ABOUT - IS FAR,FAR AWAY !

Y ?

Coz,NO ONE IS INTERESTED IN A SOLUTION ! dindooohindoo

Samir,

You ask "What are the options that world has"

Here's an excerpt of Bill Gates' recent book entitled "How to Avoid a Climate Disaster"on climate-friendly industrial processes for cement, steel and plastics:

Yes - 3 Basic Solutions which have been in use,for the last 2 decades - but are NOT COMMERCIALLY AND/OR FINANCIALLY VIABLE

So WE CAN BURN ONLY OIL AND COAL - and the CO2 is captured by the plants, via photosynthesis (fission) and fusion.BUT 1ST THE CO2 COMES IN THE ATMOSPHERE - and TREES TAKE TIME TO GROW - and they DO NOT GROW WHERE THE CO2 IS EMITTED.SO IF YOU PLANT TREES IN BRAZIL - IT WILL NOT CAPTURE THE COS OF SHENHUA ENERGY OR BAO STEEL - and even it does - it will take a long time to grow and the damage is done by then

Therefore WE CAN SEQUESTER THE COs in THE EARTH.That is TECHNICALLY VIABLE - but commercial and financial costs,IMPOSE A BURDEN- BUT FOR LARGE SCALE SEQUESTERING - WITH NEW TECH - IT MAY BECOME VIABLE ! PERHAPS A NEW IDEA OF SEQUESTERING - LIKE SEQUESTERING THE CO2 IN A NEW MATERIAL - WHICH HAS A COMMERCIAL USE AND VALUE.

Regarding Cement and Steel - we are at the stage of the Prehistoric man.In other words, the principle of using waste, scrap or recycling gas/waste heat etc.For ex slag of steel is used to make cement or uranium tailings and overburden is used to make roads (and use less cement) or use DU in civil construction (to lower steel and cement). There is NO QUANTUM LEAP here, as NO FUNDING IS THERE,IN ITS R&D.

Essentially the BROAD PRINCIPLES OF MINING GOLD AND SMELTING GOLD,AND MINING IRON AND MAKING STEEL,HAS NOT CHANGED FROM THE TIME OF PTAH HOTEP OR ALEXANDER ! That is a Tragedy ! Some say, that Christianity killed the momentum of Scientific innovation.Ptah Hotep proves that Paganism and lack of Scientific temper,is NO bar to Quantum leaps in Scientific innovation.

Yr example of Steel is a Quantum Leap ! But it is a long way from commercial viability. After that,it has to be financially viable ! The Basic Principles of Steel making,in terms of removing Oxides or wastages or adding carbon or other contents - by using energy/ electricity or other innovations ,ALREADY BEEN CRACKED in Military and Space research. However,in Military technology,COST IS NOT a criterion - and so,it is NOT commercially and financially viable in steel making. Also, the use of the Defense tech,in steel will COMPROMISE the Defense Technology.

The FACT is that Money is chasing POWER GENERATION,AND USING CLEAN POWER FOR LOCOMOTION (using e-vehicles) and USING THERMAL POWER FOR LOCOMOTION,TO CRASH OIL PRICES !

But still, there is NO Quantum leap. For ex.,burning coal,bagasse,agri-waste,wood,gas,oil to make power,in the last 150 years, involves the same primitive technology of burning water and using the steam,to move turbines. The word "Nuclear"Power also is meaningless,as the HEAT OF NUCLEAR FISSION,is used to burn water to steam and the rest ......

Even wind or tidal is like steam - because wind and water,is a form of AIR (steam),and is used to move a turbine, linked to a rotor and magnets. The same applies to geo thermal

ONLY SOLAR IS A QUANTUM LEAP,AS THE SOLAR IRRADIATION INTERACTS WITH SOME CHEMICALS on THE PANEL,TO INITIATE A LIMITED FISSION REACTION - WHICH MAKES ELECTRONS (FOR POWER NOT THERMAL POWER).But even here,CSP is back to the STEAM PROCESS,WHERE THE SOLAR HEAT IS USED TO HEAT WATER AND STORE THE HEAT - AND THE, USE THE HEAT AT NIGHT TO MAKE STEAM AND MAKE POWER !

The WORLD IS MISSING THE QUANTUM LEAP OF TESLA/EINSTEIN.Something fundamental is being missed out.Is it Hydrogen or Helium on the moon or some wonder mineral on Mars OR JUST A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WAY OF THOUGHT.

Bill Gates is an exceptional human.Someone has to apply his mind,as to NOW PTAH HOTEP AND HIS ILK,KNEW IN 3550 BC,HOW TO FIND GOLD,HOW TO BLAST THE ROCK,HOW TO MAKE SLURRY,HOW TO CONCENTRATE THE SLURRY,HOW TO REFINE IT,HOW TO SMELT THE GOLD AND THEN HOW TO MAKE GOLD MASKS.HOW WERE THE PYRAMIDS MADE ? The PRACTICE OF USING LAMPS WITH OIL WAS IN USE IN BABYLON FOR A LONG TIME ! dindooohindoo

There is a FATAL flaw,in the FUNDAMENTAL THOUGHT process,of SCIENTISTS !

samir sardana said...

Bill Gates has to develop a INTERMEDIATE RAW MATERIAL,which will absorb the CO2 - and then BE USED,TO MAKE A RAW MATERIAL,used for mass consumption like fabric, fuel, building materials, animal/fish food, algae or minerals for sea weed and sea plants.

That is the ONLY solution. The problem is that the Politicians and Diplomats do not UNDERSTAND TECH AND ITS COSTS, and the SCIENTISTS DO NOT UNDERSTAND COSTS - AND BILL GATES IS NOT ON THE TABLE ! SO THE BETS ARE SCATTERED AND ARE ON THE WORNG OPTIONS.HENCE,FAILURE IS CERTAIN !

Renewable power is NOT an option in PRC and India - beyond the current burden on the Grid Load. Renewable power, also has a load on the grid for spinning and reactive power.

LOOK AT THE US GRID IN THE WINTERS ! THE WIND BLADES FROZE ! WEATHER VARIATIONS HAVE MADE RENEWABLES UNVIABLE - HYBRIDS ARE THE WAY ! OR IS THERE ANOTHER TECHNOLOGY ? EVEN THE THEORY OF SOLAR IRRADIATION AND SOLAR REFLECTION,FROM THE SNOW AND ICE TO GENERATE SOLAR POWER - DID NOT WORK IN TEAXS !

Problem is PRC and India. In due course of time, with tech innovations in offshore wind, tidal power and solar - the % of renewables can be increased.PRC has NO geothermal power.India has Geothermal - But in ANDAMAN - where there is no usage.

For the EU,it is a political and health issue. The bet is that the health will improve, medical costs will fall, economically productive lives will increase, people will work longer, social security costs will reduce .....

On the way,the EU will develop, cutting edge renewables - which they will then, sell to PRC,India and Africa !

Quantum leaps in renewable efficiency is required. As of now,the tech leaps are not commercially matched,as there is a huge surge in raw materials for the new tech - which makes the raw material cost rise - and makes a viable tech - financially UNVIABLE.For ex,copper was being used in Solar - and copper already has industrial usage - and so,prices went up and now with COVID - COPPER IS IN A BULL ORBIT - ruining all tech innovations in Copper usage in renewables.

BUT THERE IS HOPE !

However, the world needs a quantum leap in renewables,on a MEGA SCALE,and the gate is through PRC.dindooohindoo

For PRC,renewables is ABOUT GEOPOLITICS AND SECURITY,as its fuel supply chain can be choked in Malacca and the Horn of Africa !

The idea of artificially cooling the planet to blunt climate change — in effect, blocking sunlight before it can warm the atmosphere — got a boost on Thursday when an influential scientific body urged the United States government to spend at least $100 million to research the technology.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/25/climate/geoengineering-sunlight.html

That technology, often called solar geoengineering, entails reflecting more of the sun’s energy back into space through techniques that include injecting aerosols into the atmosphere. In a new report, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine said that governments urgently need to know whether solar geoengineering could work and what the side effects might be.

“Solar geoengineering is not a substitute for decarbonizing,” said Chris Field, director of the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University and head of the committee that produced the report, referring to the need to emit less carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Still, he said, technology to reflect sunlight “deserves substantial funding, and it should be researched as rapidly and effectively as possible.”

The report acknowledged the risks that have made geoengineering one of the most contentious issues in climate policy. Those risks include upsetting regional weather patterns in potentially devastating ways, for example by changing the behavior of the monsoon in South Asia; relaxing public pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and even creating an “unacceptable risk of catastrophically rapid warming” if governments started reflecting sunlight for a period of time, and then later stopped.

But the authors argue that greenhouse gas emissions are not falling quickly enough to avoid dangerous levels of global warming, which means the world must begin to examine other options. Evidence for or against solar geoengineering, they found, “could have profound value” in guiding decisions about whether to deploy it.

That includes evidence about what the authors called the social risks: For example, if research showed that the side effects would be concentrated in poorer nations, Dr. Field said, it could be grounds not to pursue the technology, even if it benefited the world as a whole.

-------------------

Tylar Greene, a spokeswoman for NASA, which helped fund the report, said in a statement that “we look forward to reviewing the report, examining recommendations, and exploring how NASA and its research community can support this effort.”

Ko Barrett, deputy assistant administrator at NOAA, which also helped fund the report, said in a statement that the agency looked forward to “carefully reviewing” it. The Department of Energy, another funder, didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The endorsement by the National Academies might make some lawmakers feel more comfortable supporting the technology, according to Michael Gerrard, director of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at the Columbia Law School and editor of a book on solar geoengineering.

And rather than causing people to care less about curbing greenhouse gas emissions, he said, a large new federal research program into geoengineering might have the opposite effect: Jolting the public into taking climate change seriously by demonstrating that more extreme and dangerous options may soon be necessary.

“It could be so scary that people will be even more motivated to reduce emissions,” Mr. Gerrard said.

The Y of the Beef Burger !

Beef is food ! If the Cow lives for 20 years - then the cow doomed humans with his burps and farts.Imposing the Beef Burger tax will NOT reduce the number of cows - but it can FUND nrw research by Elon Musk - the torchbearer of Nikola Tesla

That is where the Hollywood movie ends !

The JUS/EU is looking for new and innovative ways to raise taxes - which its citizens will LOVE TO PAY ! It will REDUCE THE GUILT OF its citizens ! The Feel Good syndrome and the Union with Jesus Paradigm!

Once that tax is paid - that money will go down the tube via accounting manipulations - and the people will have NO CLUE !

The Govtt would have achieved its purpose !

Hence,the burger tax !

Look at the disasters of the BioMass Power and Bio Briqettes.Farmers grow crops. The plants sequester carbon in the stalk, leaves etc.The Food is just 0.1% by weight of the plant. So the plant is sequestering carbon

After harvest, the farmer BURNS THE STALK AND CO2 IS BACK IN THE AIR - IN 1 GO ! SO ALL THE CARBON SEQUESTER OVER 6 MONTHS OF A CROP IS SENT BACK INTO THE AIR IN 1 HOUR !

In cones Bio Mass power. They also send the CO2 back in the Air - but they make power - BUT BY BURNING GAZILLIONS OF WATER AND ALSO VENTING HUGE AMOUNT OF STEAM !

THIS IS SCAVENGER SCIENCE !

What can Bill do ? Bill can develop a bacteria or fungus or virus - which can decompose the entire agri waste at the farmers site - into compost or concentrated animal feed - in an aerobic reaction,in the open air,AND BY USING THE CO2.SO YOU ARE MAKING NPK from THE AIR and reducing CO2 even more !

Thereafter the bacteria should DIE -say in a few days ! Thereafter Bill can re-engineer the crop is a way that the stalk etc is more amenable to quick and productive bacterial decomposition and reduction. That will close the loop.

The Flip side is that the BIOPOWER man says that he could have GENERATED POWER ! TRUE - but by burning water and wasting fuel and money on transportation of agriwaste - and the farmer is making compost (and saving power and subsidies)

By doing scavenger science - innovation on the Quantum leap stopped - and the result,is what you are seeing today !

In any case, all agri waste cannot be converted to power, and CSP power is cheaper than Bio Mass power, and industrial/consumer use of agri-wastes,has made Bio Power unviable, and an economic loss,to the nation.

Y ? Again proving that, you cannot rely on scavenger economics, and scavenger science

Quantum leaps are required ! dindooohindoo

When I see Chaiwala talking about Green Power and Green House Gases - especially in EU and USA - I really feel sorry for the snow white race - who believe this man !

Y did SBI give a 2 Billion USD loan,to Adani’s mines,in Aussie ? Why is Chaiwala'son Adani,in need of a 2 Billion USD loan to mine coal,in Aussie, and then IMPORT IT INTO INDIA - and make power,in an IPP ? Y did this "Gift of God" to India,Mr Adani,NOT set up a 2 Billion USD - CSP in India ?

Indian CSP units are selling power to the Grid at 7 cents/Kwh.What is the ECONOMIC COST of a Coal IPP in India ? These are hybrids of Solar Thermal with Wind, and a standby conventional fuel.

The jackpot for Adani, is in the IPP in India – at say,a cost of 2 Billion USD.Safe to say that,20% is taken out already (and that was possible ONLY after, the Coal Mine in Aussie was licensed and financially closed).

How did the Adanis sell the coke to the Aussie and Global Banks to lend USD for the mine and place a condition in the loan that SBI should ALSO FUND THE AUSSIE MINE ?

The way the Indians spin it,is that INDIAN IPP sells power to the Indian Grid – the Grid is bankrupt – and the Aussie coal is feeding the IPP.So no foreign bank will fund the Coal mine,as there is a payment and soverign risk,on the IPP power sold,to the Indian Grid.

So the Foreign banker says (on the palm-greasing by the Indians) – "get an Indian Banker" ,to be a part of the Consortium ! They think that the Indian Banker, will vet the Credit and Soverign risk,of the Grid ! The Utopia of Thoughts !

What is the smell, when an Indian Bank, funds a Mine in Aussie – when no other bank in the world, wants to fund it ?

That 4 letter word ! S-C-A-M !

So Y is Aussie funding coal exports to Indian IPPs ? Aussie could have gassified the coal or converted the coal into UREA OR CEMENT ?

India is the land of Gandhi,id.est., the face of Gandhi,on a Rs 2000 note.Everything and everybody has a price – including the dead,as in,Union Carbide.

So Y did Aussie allow and fund Adani ? THEY SAY - IT WAS TO HELP THE POOOOOOR OF INIA - SO THAT THE POOOOR WILL GET POWER FROM ADANI - AND THUS,GO TO SCHOOLS AND GAIN EMPLOYMENT

THIS IS THE JOKE OF THE CENTURY ! IF AUSSIES WERE BRIBED BY THE INDIANS TO COME TO THIS CONCLUSION - THAT WOULD BE A TRAGEDY !

What is the abundant resource in Indian POOR ZONES ? Agri wastes, animal husbandry, time and vegetation.

Which makes the option of Off Grid Power, from Bio Mass and Solar – THE viable option (for which there is an abundance of grants, subsidies and soft loans)

There is NO INDUSTRY viable in the POOR zones of India – and there is also NO consumer market,as there is no purchasing power.

Bio Mass power will provide income to the poor, and also extend the agri value chain, and increase the purchasing power.dindooohindoo

AND SO Y DID AUSSIE ALLOW AND FUND THE AUSSIE MINES AND IMPLICITLY THE INDIAN POWER GRID ?

FOR MAMMON ! MAMMON = MODI !

Publicly, yes! The West boosts India as "superpower" to be used as sacrificial offering against China!!

In private, the western leaders have a very different opinion of India.

For example, ex US President Bill Clinton said in 1990s that India has a Rodney Dangerfield problem: It can’t get no respect, according to his deputy secretary of state Strobe Talbott. In a diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks in 2010, Hillary Clinton referred to India as "a self-appointed frontrunner for a permanent UN security council seat."

More recently, US President Donald Trump mocked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about Indian contribution to Afghanistan. Trump said he got along very well with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but the Indian leader was "constantly telling me he built a library in Afghanistan". "That's like five hours of what we spend... And we are supposed to say, 'oh, thank you for the library'. I don't know who is using it in Afghanistan," Trump said.

However,Chaiwala is a patriot. His heart is in the Right place - but there is nothing in the

Years of Cow Urine and Cow Dung has taken its toll

If someone carefully sees his tapes of late, his face is swollen up,and the beard is HIDING THE SWELLING !

His time is up ! He has to be cremated with cow dung and a sprinkling of cow urine !

He has had an eventful life !

INDIA IS NO MATCH TO THE SOVIET DREAM ! INDIA IS A NATION DOOMED FROM DAY 1 - AS IT NEVER EIXSTED - EVER ! RUSSIA EXISTED FOR SEVERAL CENTURIES - AND THE PARTS ANNEXED BY USSR,WERE ALSO RULED OVER BY THE RUSSIANS,FOR SEVERAL CENTURIES IN THE PAST ! dindooohindoo

PEOPLE FORGET THAT IT WAS THE BOLSHEVIKS,COMMUNISTS AND COSSACKS WHO NAILED THE NAZIS ! THEY SAVED THE WORLD FROM GERMAN IMPERIALISM,AND WITH THE NAZI SUCCESS THE RULE OF THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN ! NO ONE COULD STAND UP TO THE NAZIS - THEY WERE UNBEATABLE !

INDIA IS A HOPELESS CASE - AND THERE ARE MANY MANY MORE VURUSES IN THE PIPELINE ! To compare India to USSR is a SIN ! Or shall we say,BLASPHEMY !

As an aside.Indira Gandhi was the only leader who KNEW the worth of India and Indians ! She was NOT conned by the Soviets to send in troops into Afghan with the Soviets or collaborate with the KHAD or provide military and air logistics to the Soviets. She only supported them in the UN ! Her Imperial,Imperious,Impervious Highness - she was called - and in my view, she treated the people around her like DIRT - which was their TRUE WORTH.

Her mistake was that she IGNORED THE SOVIET INT ON HER ASSASSINATION.

Her father had DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR - as his intellectual and diplomatic genius was just NOT MATCGED by the Indians or the Indian state of the Indian Military - and HE DID NOT KNOW THAT ! RESULT - 1962 !

Her Son had NO DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR - but he did NOT treat people around him like DIRT - which was their TRUE WORTH.He was conned by the IPKF and then killed. He was no simpleton - but a kind.handsome, caring, idealist and slowly becoming a statesman - JUST THE KIND OF A MAN - INDIA DOES NOT DESERVE !

This is the reality of India ! The TRUTH is that India DID NOT DESERVE NEHRU OR INDIRA GANDHI ! Had these 2 not been there - there would have been NO INDIA,as it exists today !

#IEA: Nations Must Drop #Fossil Fuels, Fast. It would very likely keep the average global temperature from increasing 1.5 C above preindustrial levels — beyond which scientists say the #Earth faces irreversible damage. #renewableenergy #ClimateCrisis https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/18/climate/climate-change-emissions-IEA.html?smid=tw-share

https://www.iea.org/reports/net-zero-by-2050

That’s significant, given the fact that the influential agency is not an environmental group but an international organization that advises world capitals on energy policy. Formed after the oil crises of the 1970s, the agency’s reports and forecasts are frequently cited by energy companies and investors as a basis for long-term planning.

“It’s a huge shift in messaging if they’re saying there’s no need to invest in new fossil fuel supply,” said Kelly Trout, senior research analyst at Oil Change International, an environmental advocacy group.

Several major economies, including the United States and the European Union, have recently pledged to zero out their emissions responsible for global warming by midcentury. But many world leaders have not yet come to grips with the extraordinary transformation of the global energy system that is required to do so, the agency warned.

“The sheer magnitude of changes needed to get to net zero emissions by 2050 is still not fully understood by many governments and investors,” Fatih Birol, the agency’s executive director, said in an interview.

Net zero emissions doesn’t mean countries would stop emitting carbon dioxide altogether. Instead, they would need to sharply reduce most of the carbon dioxide generated by power plants, factories and vehicles. Any emissions that could not be fully erased would be offset, such as by forests or artificial technologies that can pull carbon dioxide directly out of the atmosphere.

To reach that goal of net zero worldwide by 2050, every nation would need to move much faster and more aggressively away from fossil fuels than they are currently doing, the report found.

For instance, the annual pace of installations for solar panels and wind turbines worldwide would have to quadruple by 2030, the agency said. For the solar industry, that would mean building the equivalent of what is currently the world’s largest solar farm every day for the next decade.

For now, the world remains off course. Last month, the agency warned that global carbon dioxide emissions were expected to rise at their second-fastest pace ever in 2021 as countries recovered from the ravages of the coronavirus pandemic and global coal burning neared a high, led by a surge of industrial activity in Asia.

“We’re seeing more governments around the world make net-zero pledges, which is very good news,” Mr. Birol said. “But there’s still a huge gap between the rhetoric and the reality.”

Some #Modi Bhakts are trolling his critics. The tragedy unfolding for #Indian-#Americans is nothing to "lol" about as some #Hindutva trolls are doing on #socialmedia while attacking critics of #BJP. Many have lost multiple family members. Read "The Quint"

A tech entrepreneur and community activist based in San Francisco Bay Area, Bhushan has lost seven family members in India to COVID-19. While he remains thankful for those recovering, the loss of loved ones has hit him hard.

Bhushan’s aunt passed away, followed by his uncle a few days later. Their California-based daughter and Bhushan’s cousin, Ruchika Kumar wrote in a Facebook post, “Mummy was right in calling papa a copycat. He copied her even in death…”

Indian Americans are an educated and high-income migrant community. Even though most of them have moved to the US willingly for professional opportunities, they always carry a bit of yearning for their motherland in their hearts. Watching India surrender to the virus, have left them bereaved and exasperated.

“The difference is access to life-saving health care. Here (Santa Clara county, California) the guidance was reasonably clear. Data was published, and you could trust the data. Numbers were not being underreported. In India the official figures have no bearing of reality. How do you have faith in what’s going on?” says Sanjiv Sahay.

Desis are constantly swaying between optimism in America and gloom in India. Happy and boisterous social media groups, connecting them with their loved ones in India, have turned into a harbinger of death. Laughter has been replaced by much-needed prayers.

A resident of Foster City in California, Sonia Bhanot was to be in Delhi this spring, to meet her mother and sisters. She felt confident to make the long journey after getting fully vaccinated. She has had to put her travel plans on hold given the public health situation in India.

“I haven’t met my sister after her husband passed away last year. I was hoping to visit. There are family members and close friends in Delhi who have COVID-19. Some are recovering. Hamare liye to COVID khatam hi nahi ho raha. Pehle yahan, ab wahan. I am not removing my mask, even if others do,” says Sonia.

IISS: Cyber Capabilities and National Power: A Net Assessment

London-based THE INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR STRATEGIC STUDIES

https://www.iiss.org/blogs/research-paper/2021/06/cyber-capabilities-national-power

India has frequently been the victim of cyber attacks, including on its critical infrastructure, and has attributed a significant proportion of them to China or Pakistan. CERT-In reported, for example, that there were more than 394,499 incidents in 2019,44 and 2020 saw an upsurge in attacks from China.45 Of particular concern to the Indian government are cyber attacks by North Korea that use Chinese digital infrastructure.46 The vast major- ity of the cyber incidents flagged by CERT-In appear to have been attempts at espionage,47 but they could also have resulted in serious damage to the integrity of
Indian networks and platforms. In 2020, India had the second-highest incidence of ransomware attacks in the world48 and the government banned 117 Chinese mobile applications because of security concerns.49

---------
Public statements by Indian officials and other open- source material indicate that India has developed rela- tively advanced offensive cyber capabilities focused on Pakistan. It is now in the process of expanding these capabilities for wider effect.
India reportedly considered a cyber response against Pakistan in the aftermath of the November 2008 terror- ist attacks in Mumbai, with the NTRO apparently at the forefront of deliberations.67 A former national security advisor has since indicated publicly that India pos- sesses considerable capacity to conduct cyber-sabotage operations against Pakistan,68 which appears credible

--------------------
Overall, India’s focus on Pakistan will have given it useful operational experience and some viable regional offensive cyber capabilities. It will need to expand its cyber-intelligence reach to be able to deliver sophisti- cated offensive effect further afield, but its close collab- oration with international partners, especially the US, will help it in that regard.

“Doubt is Our Product”: It’s vital that scientists engage with the public and the media to ensure that their research is accurately represented

https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpolicy/doubt-is-our-product/

Recent research by Marcus Munafò and colleagues suggested that standardised cigarette packs increase the prominence of health warnings in non-smokers and light smokers. Interestingly, they didn’t see this in regular smokers. However, the research was misrepresented by British American Tobacco, who used it to argue that “plain packaging may actually reduce smokers’ attention to warnings”. He argues that scientists have the responsibility to make sure that their research is accurately represented, and that attempts to misrepresent their research are challenged.

Cigarette smoking is addictive. Cigarette smoking causes lung cancer. Today these statements are uncontroversial, but it’s easy to forget that this was not the case until relatively recently. The first studies reporting a link between smoking and lung cancer appeared in the 1950’s (although scientists in Germany had reported a link earlier), while the addictiveness of tobacco, and the isolation of nicotine as the principal addictive constituent, was not established until some time later. Part of the reason for this is simply that scientific progress is generally slow, and scientists themselves are typically not the kind of people to get ahead of themselves.

However, another factor is that at every stage the tobacco industry has resisted scientific evidence which indicates harms associated with the use of its products. One way in which it has done this is by suggesting that there is uncertainty around the core evidence base used to support tobacco control policies. A 1969 document from the Brown and Williamson tobacco company (a subsidiary of British American Tobacco) outlines this strategy: “Doubt is our product, since it is the best means of competing with the ‘body of fact’ [linking smoking with disease] that exists in the mind of the general public”.

This approach seeks to “neutralize the influence of academic scientists”, and has since been adopted more widely by other lobby groups. The energy industry has used a similar approach in response to consensus among climate scientists on the role of human activity in climate change. But what’s the problem? There are always a number of ways to interpret data, scientists will hold different theoretical positions despite being in possession of the same basic facts, people are entitled to their opinion. That’s fine, but the tobacco industry goes beyond this and actively misrepresents the facts. Why do I care? Because recently our research was misrepresented in this way.

There is ongoing debate around whether to introduce standardised packaging for tobacco products. This is a prominent policy issue in the UK and elsewhere at the moment, particularly following recent claims that David Cameron’s electoral strategist, Lynton Crosby, may have influenced the decision to drop the introduction of standardised packaging from the coalition government’s planned legislation. The tobacco company Philip Morris International has a contract with Lynton Crosby’s firm, Crosby Textor Fullbrook, for lobbying work in the UK, including on standardised packaging of tobacco.

Public health campaigners mostly favour standardised packaging, while the tobacco industry is opposed to it. No particular surprises there, but given that only Australia has so far introduced standardised packaging there’s a need for more research to inform the debate.

#India Is Hiding a #Nightmare #Snakebite #Massacre. 58,000 #Indian citizens die each year due to snakebite https://news.yahoo.com/india-ignoring-nightmare-snakebite-massacre-085042370.html?soc_src=social-sh&soc_trk=tw&tsrc=twtr via @YahooNews

An onslaught of fatal snakebite attacks is sweeping India and killing tens of thousands each year—and so far, the government’s response has been to ignore, trivialize, and cover up the crisis altogether.

A 2020 study, which was based on verbal autopsies, suggests that on average, close to 58,000 Indian citizens die each year due to snakebites. In contrast, the country’s government reports ridiculously low numbers: In 2018, the Health and Family Welfare minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey declared that only 689 snake-related deaths had occurred in India that year—a fraction of the figure referenced in the study, and one that any expert would quickly balk at.

Shashikant Dubey, 28, was working in his rice fields last month in Niwari, a small rural district in central India’s Madhya Pradesh state, when he suddenly felt a burning sensation in his hand. “The pain was such that I felt like someone had skinned my hand,” Dubey told The Daily Beast.

At first, he thought a scorpion had stung him, but as his hand started turning black he realized that he had been bitten by a venomous snake. Growing up, Dubey had often seen people in his village dying after getting bitten by snakes. Instead of a hospital, villagers would often be taken to a local quack who would bathe them in milk and water, hoping that it would please their deity (in Hindu culture, milk is considered to have purifying qualities) and their lives would be saved.

But last year, when a vegetable seller in the village died after the quack refused to let her family take her to the hospital, a sense of repulsion against the tradition began to grow in Dubey’s community.

“That death was subconsciously stuck in my mind. So I immediately planned to go to the hospital rather than to the village quack, " Dubey said. But the nearest hospital with access to the anti-venom is more than 10 km away from his village, and Dubey was advised by other villagers to deep cut his hand and let the 'dirty' blood out until he managed to rush to a doctor.

By the time he was taken to the hospital, his blood oxygen saturation levels had dropped significantly and his condition had worsened. Over the next few days, he was injected with 40 doses of anti-venom vials.

Still, Dubey was lucky. He survived. But Salman Qamar’s 24-year-old friend, Akhilesh Thapa, wasn't.

“Akhilesh was sleeping in his home when a snake bit him. It was nighttime and we couldn't immediately arrange transport to carry him to the hospital. And ultimately when we did, it was too late and he died on the way [to the hospital],” Qamar, a resident of Bettiah area near the Indo-Nepal border, told The Daily Beast.

Qamar says such incidents are all too common in his village.

“Last year, a lady who was living near my house went to the toilet during the night and a snake bit her. It was during monsoon and it was dark so when the snake bit her she thought it was some insect,” he said. “Due to the darkness, she couldn’t realize that it was a snake and then she slept. During the night the venom spread throughout her body and she eventually died,” Qamar explained.

There are many reasons for India’s snakebite crisis, including a lack of first aid facilities, dependence on ‘spiritual healers’ or quacks, and an overwhelming population living near agricultural fields where snakes come to hunt rodents. Another factor is India’s reverence for snakes: Hindus consider Shiva, one of the principal deities of Hinduism, as being ‘the lord of the snakes.’ During a festival last month, a 25-year-old man in India’s eastern state of Bihar died while handling snakes at a religious festival.
