The Canadian government has recently taken a series of steps to cut the number of international students studying in Canada. This is believed to be related to the extremely hostile Indian government response to Canadian allegations that the Indian officials ordered assassinations of Sikh activists in Canada. There are now new reports that Ottawa has asked Indian students to resubmit their documents for review. Earlier, Canada made a decision to end the fast-track visa process, known as Student Direct Stream (SDS), for students coming from India, Pakistan and a few other developing countries. Meanwhile, US F-1 visas granted to Indian students fell 38% between January and September of 2024.
Sikh Activist Assassinations:
The United States and Canadian governments are alleging that Indian government agents plotted assassinations of Sikh dissidents on their soils. Their investigations paint a shocking picture of how recklessly Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government operates.

The criminal charges announced by Washington and Ottawa are backed by Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, the remaining three countries that make up the 5-nation intelligence sharing alliance known as the Five Eyes. Revelations made by the US Justice Department and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) indicate that the authorization for Sikh assassinations came directly from the top Indian government officials, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's right-hand man Amit Shah. International criminal gang leader Lawrence Bishnoi is listed among the people tasked with carrying out the murders. These allegations are based on intelligence gathered from multiple communication intercepts among Indian government officials in New Delhi and Indian diplomats posted in Canada.

Canada's Student Direct Stream:
As of 2024, there are 427,000 Indian students studying in Canada, surpassing the 337,630 Indian students enrolled in the United States, according to media reports. The SDS was very popular in India, with nearly four in five Indian students applying for their Canadian study permit through the program.
Until recently, foreign students who applied for a Canadian study permit through the SDS saw a significant approval rate advantage over regular stream applicants in every emerging market. In 2022, India was the biggest beneficiary of SDS with 78% of applicants approved, followed by Pakistan 44%, Vietnam 22%, and China 7%.
Canada's decision to end SDS will hurt future student visa applicants from more than a dozen countries, including Pakistan.
Demand to Resubmit Documents:
Indian students in Canada are deeply concerned after receiving notices from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requesting the resubmission of critical documents, including study permits, visas, academic records, attendance, and part-time work details. Many of these students hold visas valid for up to two more years, causing fear.
International Student Visa Cap:
The Canadian government has also decided to reduce the number of student visas granted each year. The international student visa cap for 2025 and 2026 is 437,000, which is a 10% reduction from the 2024 target of 485,000. It has also increased the cost of living requirement for international students from C$10,000 to C$20,635 a year.
Indian F-1 Student Visas in US:
US F-1 visas granted to Indian students fell 38% between January and September of 2024. According to the US State Department, 64,008 F-1 visas were granted to Indian students, a significant drop from the 1,03,495 issued during the same period in 2023. This number is also reportedly lower than the 93,181 issued in 2022 and marginally higher than the 65,235 recorded in 2021, marking the lowest post-pandemic level, according to Indian media reports.

That doesn't make sense. Why would Canada resort to steps that makes it tougher for international students to study there (even if Indians form the largest number of the lot), just because Indian govt agents assassinated a Sikh Canadian who was a fugitive from Indian law? You yourself have stated that the step taken by Canada impacts applicants from a dozen countries including Pakistan. That sounds like carpet bombing a city to take out one guy. Canada's rift is with India alone, and there are plenty of India-specific steps that they could take as a response - like reducing work and student visas for Indians specifically, sanctions or economic embargo on Indian companies etc.. Besides, if the opportunity in Canada is closed, Indian students will try to go somewhere else instead like Australia, Germany or other European nations. Prospect of studying and working in Germany is becoming an increasingly popular option in my parts and many people here are taking German language classes in preparation for it these days. (And if it isn't Germany, it could be France or Japan.)
Unless the steps taken by Canadian or US govts target Indians specifically, I think it is far more likely that general anti-immigrant sentiments or other factors are at play here.
I agree that in general some countries are evaluating the cost-benefits of students from South Asia and similarly profiled places. In UK, there has been a backlash against mickey mouse degrees which are also popular among indian students and in any case, many people are sending their kids there to be able to brag in the wedding bazaar. Situation is not too different in Germany as well, though quality of universities are probably better than UK and India.

Ambedkar Row: Did ‘BJP’s predecessors’ burn Babasaheb’s effigy, as Jairam Ramesh said?
https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/explained-politics/ambedkar-burn-effigy-amit-shah-9731980/
Shah had said in the Rajya Sabha a day ago, “It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If they had taken God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven.” Shah also said that Ambedkar had resigned from Nehru’s Cabinet because he was “ignored” and “dissatisfied”.

The RSS was bitterly opposed to the Hindu Code Bill, which aimed to reform matters related to aspects like marriage and succession, giving more rights to women.
Historian Ramachandra Guha in his book, India After Gandhi, writes: “On 11 December 1949, the RSS organised a public meeting at the Ram Lila grounds in Delhi, where speaker after speaker condemned the [Hindu Code] bill. One called it ‘an atom bomb on Hindu society’. Another likened it to the draconian Rowlatt Act introduced by the colonial state… he said, the struggle against this Bill would signal the downfall of Nehru’s government. The next day a group of RSS workers marched on the Assembly buildings, shouting ‘Down with Hindu code bill’ and ‘May Pandit Nehru perish’. The protesters burnt effigies of the prime minister and Dr Ambedkar, and then vandalised the car of Sheikh Abdullah.”
What RSS, Golwalkar, Savarkar said about Constitution
Among the reasons Ambedkar resigned as Law Minister was his frustration with Nehru on not getting the Hindu Code Bill passed soon enough, in the form Ambedkar wanted. Yet it was the right wing, including factions within the Congress, that had opposed the Bill tooth and nail.
Ambedkar had said about the Hindu Code Bill, “To leave inequality between class and class, between sex and sex which is the soul of Hindu society untouched and to go on passing legislation relating to economic problems is to make a farce of our Constitution and to build a palace on a dung heap.”
Guha wrote in an opinion piece for The Indian Express how the RSS mouthpiece, Organiser, opposed this Bill. “An article in the Organiser, dated November 2, 1949, characterised the Hindu Code Bill “as a direct invasion on the faith of the Hindus”, remarking that “its provisions empowering women to divorce is revolting to the Hindu ideology”. An editorial published a month later (“The Hindu Code Bill”, the Organiser, December 7, 1949) led with this paragraph: “We oppose the Hindu Code Bill. We oppose it because it is a derogatory measure based on alien and immoral principles…” It then went on to state that “Rishi Ambedkar and Maharishi Nehru… would atomise society and infect every family with scandal, suspicion and vice.”
The right, including former Sarsanghchalak MS Golwalkar, were not particularly enthused by the Constitution either. Golwaklar wrote in his Bunch of Thoughts, “Our Constitution too is just a cumbersome and heterogeneous piecing together of various articles from various Constitutions of Western countries. It has absolutely nothing, which can be called our own. Is there a single word of reference in its guiding principles as to what our national mission is and what our keynote in life is? No! Some lame principles from the United Nations Charter or from the Charter of the now defunct League of Nations and some features from the American and British Constitutions have been just brought together in a mere hotchpotch.”
Similar views were echoed by VD Savarkar. In Women in Manusmriti, he wrote: “The worst about the new constitution of Bharat is that there is nothing Bharatiya about it…Manusmriti is that scripture which is most worship-able after Vedas for our Hindu Nation and which from ancient times has become the basis of our culture-customs, thought and practice. This book for centuries has codified the spiritual and divine march of our nation. Even today the rules which are followed by crores of Hindus in their lives and practice are based on Manusmriti.”
POLITICO: Republican brawl on immigration erupts as MAGA and tech world clash
A debate over legal immigration exploded during the Christmas holiday shows that the party isn't unified, even on its strongest issue with voters.
https://www.politico.com/news/2024/12/27/musk-mtg-loomer-infighting-high-skill-immigration-00196083
An online debate over high-skilled immigration between Elon Musk, Vivek Ramaswamy and MAGA evangelists reveals Donald Trump’s Republican Party is grappling with growing pains as it prepares to retake the White House.
Days after the powerful allies of Trump in Silicon Valley took to social media to argue for a greater number of high-skilled immigrants, with a side-swipe at American culture for emphasizing “mediocrity over excellence,” some members of the far-right said such policies would make America “look like India.”
-----------
“The United States graduates over half a million STEM students per year. If there is an issue in the tech workforce, then we need to address it at the educational level, not import a problem away,” said Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) in an X post on Thursday.
--------
It’s the latest chapter in a controversy that spread after far-right activist Laura Loomer criticized Trump for naming Sriram Krishnan, an Indian-American technology entrepreneur and investor who has advocated for lifting country caps on green cards, as his senior policy adviser on artificial intelligence, calling him a “career leftist.”
Loomer wrote, “We are substituting a third world migrant invasion for a third world tech invasion,” and later followed up with, “‘High skilled immigrant’ doesn’t have running water or toilet paper.”
Musk hit back, writing on Christmas Day that a “permanent shortage of excellent engineering talent,” is the “fundamental limiting factor in Silicon Valley” that could be addressed through an increase of skilled-labor visas. Ramaswamy followed on Thursday with a post that blamed a culture that “venerates Cory from ‘Boy Meets World,’ or Zach & Slater over Screech in ‘Saved by the Bell,’ or ‘Stefan’ over Steve Urkel in ‘Family Matters’” — a favoring of popularity over smarts that “will not produce the best engineers.”
That earned a swift rejoinder from Nick Fuentes, a conservative firebrand who wrote, “I don’t know who needs to hear this but the latest push for H-1B visas actually has nothing to do with jocks and nerds or high school prom — it’s about whether we want 500 million indians to move here.”
----------------------
Meanwhile, Democrats are praising immigration as one of America’s powerful drivers of prosperity.
In a Washington Post interview, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), who represents Silicon Valley, supported Krishnan and entrepreneurs in tech who have chosen to become American citizens.
He posted, “It is GREAT that talent around the world wants to come here, not to China, & that Sriram can rise to the highest levels. It’s called American exceptionalism.”
And it’s causing some other Democrats to cast the division between Republicans and the Trump movement at large as racist.
“The far-right backlash against Indian immigrants confirms what we in the Democratic Party have long known,” Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) said in a post on X. “That the far right is implacably hostile to all forms of non-European immigration regardless of legal status. It’s not about status. It’s about race. The far right prefers ‘purity’ over prosperity.”

A plot in paradise and India’s struggle for influence in Asia
Secret contacts between Indian agents and politicians in the Maldives over ousting its pro-China leader reflect the growing contest between Asia’s great powers.
By Gerry Shih and Siddharthya Roy
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/12/30/maldives-president-muizzu-india-china-influence/
In January, after Muizzu had won and taken office, an adviser to the Muizzu family said, a senior RAW intelligence officer at New Delhi’s embassy in Washington explored a plan to overthrow the president with two Indian intermediaries who had political and business contacts in the Maldives. One intermediary was Shirish Thorat, a former Indian police officer who has worked as a private military contractor and who advised Mohamed Nasheed when he was the Maldivian president on how to curb Islamist radicalization. The other was Savio Rodrigues, a publisher based in the Indian state of Goa who previously served as a spokesman for India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The Muizzu family adviser provided The Post with surveillance records of phone calls and meetings held by the RAW official and Thorat, who now lives near Washington, but did not explain how the records were obtained. When contacted by The Post, Thorat and Rodrigues separately confirmed the existence of plans to remove Muizzu but declined to say whether they were working on the Indian government’s behalf. When asked about his meetings with an Indian intelligence officer, Thorat explained that he sometimes paid social visits to friends working at the embassy and said he was not surprised that he had been surveilled, “given my work.”

Dear Sir
Asalam Alaikum
I hope you and your team of this blog is doing well.
Sir I have checked some YouTube videos and I was surprised to see that since last month, their have been tones of videos uploaded on YouTube which actually is about how Indians are facing racial abuses and problems in America, Australia, South Korea and even in Canada.
I think UK is also not far behind when it comes to making racial comments specially against Indians.
Sir many Indians are saying that the reason why they are facing such level of hatred and racial discrimination in these western countries is because Indians are more talented and highly educated than these western people and they are eligible to get more jobs in these countries than Americans and other westerns.
This causes joblessesness amongst the Americans and in other western countries because when Indian gets most of the jobs in there countries specially in high tech sectors, their are very few jobs left for the local Westerners.
Sir also the reason these Indians give is that huge chunk of the H1 visas actually goes to Indians who have completed their academic qualification in India and want to work in America and those who want to continue their higher studies in America after getting jobs.
Sir how true are these justifications and reasons given by Indians about what ever that is happening with their people in these countries.
Is it only this reason or their are other reasons as well?
Many Americans have been invited on TV programs where they have insulted these Indians for having lack of hygiene and even for having such typical Indian accent when speaking English.
Do you really think that it is the issue of employment amongst the Westerners which creates an Indian phobia in Americans and Westerners or their are other reasons as well?
Thanks
Salam Sir
This comment is about the post that I just made about racial discrimination and hatred that Indians face in these foreign countries.
Don't you think that Indians actially deserve this kind of treatment in Western countries as they themselves are more racist than any nation on earth?
This could be noticed from the way they treat lower caste Hindus specially Dalits and other religious minorities in India.
And also don't you think that they deserve such racial discrimination and hatred in these countries the way they have been busy insulting and underestimating Pakistan in the media.?
Salam Sir
I have just seen a video on YouTube titled " INDIANS ONLY HIRE INDIANS? SHOCKING TRUTH ABOUT H1B VISA DISCRIMINATION" . This video is from a YouTube channel titled " INTERNATIONAL PASSPORT".
Sir in this video an interviewer is taking an interview of an American and in this interview this American interviewee is explaining how he faced discrimination when he was working in an IT company in Dallas city of Texas State. He said that most or all the top level management in his company were Americans White and all the contractors where African Americans.
This American interviewee said that things were going good and fine but as soon as an Indian was hired at the position of a manager in this IT company, he fired all the African American contractors including this white American guy.
The other Americans were surprised that why this white American was fired by this Indian manager. Later they found out that all these African american contractors and other jobs were replaced by INDIANS.
This is how Indians establish their monopoly in America when they are appointed at high positions.
